They say the days are long, but the years are short. Nowhere is that more evident than the first birthday. It’s a major milestone—a graduation from babyhood into the world of toddlerhood.
But if I’m being honest, this session isn’t just for the baby. It’s for the parents, too. Especially for first-time parents, that first birthday carries a lot of weight. During these sessions, I often see Mom and Dad take a quiet breath, looking at their little one with that "I can’t believe it’s been a year" expression. You start to reminisce about the blur of the newborn days, the first smiles, and the fast-paced adventure that led you here. This session allows us to hit the pause button, freeze time for just a moment, and truly take in the miracle of how much has changed in 365 days.
The Story: A "Berry" Special Milestone
Recently, I had the pleasure of hosting a "My Berry First Birthday" session for one sweet girl. We leaned into the theme with various shades of pink, creating a soft, whimsical backdrop for her big day.
We started the session with classic portraits. Like many little ones, she was a bit hesitant at first, staring into the lens with wide, curious eyes. To help her feel at home, we brought out our "secret weapon": small balloons! Having something tangible to play with helped her relax and let her personality shine before the main event.
The Breakthrough Moment
Mom was thoughtful about the menu, opting for a homemade banana cake to reduce the heavy sugars. At first, our sweet girl was a bit skeptical of this new object in front of her, taking only tiny, polite nibbles.
We knew she just needed a little "hype team." With her parents singing Happy Birthday, applauding, and playing peek-a-boo behind the scenes, she started to get excited. In a burst of pure joy, she began flailing her arms up and down—and then it happened. She slapped the cake!
The "squish" of the texture changed everything. Once she realized she was allowed to make a mess, she had a blast. She smashed, she played, and she thoroughly enjoyed every bit of that banana cake.
Expert Tip: The "Something New, Something Favorite" Rule
If you’re planning a milestone session, it’s normal to worry about whether your baby will actually "smash" the cake. I always recommend following the traditional mealtime rule: Serve something new with something favorite.
While the cake and its texture might be entirely new to your baby, you can bridge the gap by:
- Flavor Pairing: Choosing a cake flavor they already love (like the banana cake used here).
- The Fruit Trick: Hiding chunks of their favorite fruit (like strawberries or blueberries) inside the frosting or on top.
Let’s Celebrate Your First Year
Whether your child is a cake-lover or a cake-hater, these sessions are about celebrating the beautiful, messy, and incredibly fast reality of your child's first year.
Pro-Tip for Planning: To ensure your memories are ready for the big celebration, I strongly recommend booking your session when your baby is 11 months old. This allows plenty of time for the editing process and ensures you receive your final images and custom artwork in time to display them at the birthday party!
