The Christmas Gift: Why Our Newborn Sessions are Always Baby-Led
Every new parent has the same "nightmare" scenario before a newborn session: What if my baby just won't stop crying?
At Life Happens Photography, we don't expect "perfect" babies—we expect real ones. This was especially true during a recent session for a sweet baby girl born just a few days before Christmas.
Navigating the Holiday Whirlwind
The timing of a newborn session is always a delicate balance, but the holidays add a layer of beautiful chaos. After the baby arrived, Mom spent a few days in the hospital, followed by those first few hazy days of adjusting to life at home. By the time they found their rhythm, New Year’s was right around the corner.
The optimal window for newborn portraits was closing, and the holiday rush made finding the "perfect" moment tricky. We decided to schedule the session New Year’s Day! It turned out to be the perfect choice. Hosting the session in the comfort of their home in Buda, Texas, was a lifesaver; the family was still recovering from the New Year’s celebrations and the exhaustion of those first few weeks with a newborn. Staying put allowed them to relax while we brought the studio to them.
Building Trust in the Living Room
As we set up in the living room, Mom was visibly anxious. Every time the baby caught a little fuss, she instinctively jumped up. The second time it happened, I managed to calm the baby before she could even reach us. She looked at me and said, "Of course, you're a mom." In that moment, the anxiety melted into trust. She knew her baby was in safe, experienced hands, which is the foundation of every successful session.
Listening to the Baby’s Needs
This session quickly reminded us of the importance of being "baby-led." We noticed early on that this sweet girl wanted to be warm and held. Every time we tried an unwrapped pose, she would huddle into a little ball, communicating her need for security and warmth. Once we transitioned to a full swaddle to meet her needs, the session became a breeze. By listening to her cues rather than forcing a shot, we captured her at her most peaceful.
Safety First: The "Froggy" Pose Reimagined
During our planning, Mom asked if we could capture the popular "froggy pose." While beautiful, this pose can be dangerous if done traditionally, potentially hurting baby's delicate neck. We take a strong stance against any pose that risks a baby's safety.
Instead, we used a safe workaround: Baby rested comfortably and safely nestled on top of her mother, using a clever background setup to recreate the look without ever compromising the baby's head and neck support. The result was a stunning, safe recreation of the pose that became one of Mom’s (and ours) absolute favorites.
A Very Merry Balance
Because she arrived during the most wonderful time of the year, we balanced her gallery with a mix of memories:
- Festive Fun: Portraits featuring a holiday wreath, a red truck, and the family Christmas tree.
- Timeless Portraits: Classic setups with the moon and stars and a cozy bed.
The Beauty of In-Home Sessions
By choosing an in-home session, this family avoided the stress of packing up, traveling, and ignoring mom's very real needs for recovery, all during a busy holiday season. We took all the time needed for diaper changes and feedings, ensuring that "Life Happens" without the rush and allowing the "New Year's recovery" to happen naturally.
